Completed: 2020

Project description: TJOA partner, Alex Worden worked directly with A.Zahner to assist in the design and development of a metal skin for a football stadium. Alex worked with the Design Assist team to rationalize a triangular metal panel skin that would cover the entire exterior of the stadium.

Coupling the fabrication parameters defined by A.Zahner regarding panel size, span, fastener connections with the structural capabilities of the aluminum sheet material relative to the RWDI wind-loads, Alex developed a workflow to swiftly and accurately design the panel geometry as well as the supporting frame assembly for the panels.

Within the design assist process there were multiple framing techniques explored. Through leveraging the Rhino/ Grasshopper platform, coupled with custom Visual-basic and C++ scripting capabilities, the team could quickly explore multiple iterations while maintaining the critical accuracy required for such a project. Final engineering began in mid 2018 and Zahner migrated the panel geometry into the Dessault Catia modeling platform for final fabrication.
