Role: Parametric Optimization, Shop and Installation Drawings for Bird Mitigation Wire
Location: Menlo Park, CA
Completed: 2022
TJOA was engaged to assist in the development of shop and installation drawings for bird mitigation wire to be added to the Frank Gehry bridge at the Meta Campus. The complexity of the bridge and the strategic location of the bird wire required processing the 3D model of the bridge where specific girders could be identified as areas of concern for bird nesting.
As to not detract from the bridges aesthetic, The BirdBarrier product was implemented where alternating stainless steel posts with horizontal stainless steel wire prevents birds from landing on ledges. The rules behind the product were implemented into a Grasshopper script by TJOA and populated into the shop drawings at the bespoke locations noted by the architect and client. As to not drill into the bridge members, all bird wire posts were either attached through clamps or adhesive.
